AbstractThis short paper describes a comparative study among three techniques to obtain cloud cover index to be used as input data in radiative transfer model BRASIL-SR developed to derive all-sky surface global solar irradiation. The main goal is to establish the most reliable technique to prevent errors caused by permanent cloudy or clear sky conditions and cirrus contamination. The techniques produced almost identical results when applied to a ground-truth site in Florianópolis, as expected. This study will now proceed by using a new set of ground measurements from sites based in Caicó and Balbina to characterize extreme conditions of permanent clear and cloudy skies, respectively.
